Course Coordinator

Kay Schaefer, born in 1960, is a consultant in tropical medicine and travelers’ health in Cologne, Germany. He holds an M.D. (University of Berlin), a Ph.D. (University of Amsterdam), an MSc in Clinical Tropical Medicine (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) and a DTM&H (University of London). He has lived for many years in East Africa, carrying out clinical work and research on visceral leishmaniasis, malaria and schistosomiasis. His results have been published in internationally recognized journals. He is a member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTM&H) and the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM). Between 1995 and 2023 he has organized and supervised 66 TROPMEDEX round-trip excursions for healthcare professionals to Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Ghana. He is fluent in German, English, Italian and Kiswahili. In addition he is familiar with the country, people and wildlife of Africa.
